13’2” Between Us

45 minute multi-media installation and performance, 2025

13’2” Between Us is an intimate experience for small audiences through a kaleidoscope of sound, storytelling, choreography and animation set within a multi-media installation created for the gymnasium of the Vancouver Buddhist Temple.  This mult-disciplinary work explores the call and response of letters both real and fictionalized, poems and major events that fill the gap between two siblings (Mochizuki’s paternal grandfather and his brother, a pole vaulter placing 5th 1932 Summer Los Angeles Olympics). The siblings are separated by the large body of water; the Pacific Ocean and the impact of WWII on their fate and livelihoods. Their stories intertwine with the sound waves of two other exiled characters: a translator (Shiho Sakanishi) and a radio disc jockey (Tokyo Rose).
