Fortune House

One-on-one performances, 2014

Fortune House was a 3 week long project (open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) where the artist offered tarot, tea and palm readings in exchange for the participant’s ‘monster’ stories. Over 40 people came to receive an approximately 30 minute session. These sessions included a very detailed and intimate reading often generated by the participant making one single wish. Following the reading was a short audio recording with the artist and participant of their very personal and intimate monster stories. The monster stories ranged from personal fear, dreams, nightmares, old myths, and discussions of what we might classify as a ‘monster’ in contemporary society. These audio recordings of the participant’s ‘monster’ stories have been integrated into a soundscape to be used for the artist’s performance, loch. What is left behind is a collection of sculptural monsters called all of your monsters made in response after re-listening to each story.

This project was produced during a residency at Koganecho Art Bazaar Fictive Asia Communities 2014, Koganecho, Yokohama, Japan.

Fortune House was also part of group exhibition Group Therapy at Frye Art Museum, Seattle, USA.
