Tides & Moons: Herring Capital
My solo exhibition Tides & Moons: Herring Capital is on at the Nanaimo Art Gallery until January 8, 2023. The installation brings to light the lives and histories of Japanese Canadian salted herring industries in the Nanaimo surrounding areas before WWII. Using animation and ‘storytelling objects’ like the ceramic and wood herring automata, the year long research project presents glimpses into the lives of Japanese Canadian salted herring workers and boat builders that are often under-represented in Canadian history. This exhibition is the third exhibition through which Nanaimo Art Gallery asks the question, What stories do we tell?
