Ancestral Dreams & Other Premonitions
Central Gallery, Kamloops Art Gallery
April 20 - July 6, 2024
In this first survey presentation at the Kamloops Art Gallery, the bodies of work Tides & Moons: Herring Capital (2022), Autumn Strawberry (2021), Cave to Dream (2019), and The Sakaki Tree, a Jewel, and the Mirror (2020) are exhibited together with short films, puppetry, and prints related to these artworks. Curated by Charo Neville, this survey exhibition spans artworks where research began from 2017-2022 and presents a large body of work that is “weaving together multi-generational experiences, this exhibition connects the present, past, and future to give voice to personal stories that reveal a larger narrative of Japanese resilience in Canada. Mochizuki’s ambitious multi-media environments hold space for difficult histories to be understood by immersing us in re-imagined worlds, not unlike a dream.”
